Juan Antonio Vargas Briones fell into a career designing movie posters quite naturally. He was the son of the founder of the first film publicity agency in Mexico. The budding artist learned his trade from his father, and fine tuned it at the Academia de San Carlos --the most prestigious art school in Mexico. Vargas quickly became a sought after artist, and his posters were among the most beautiful in the business. While he specialized in working on serious dramas, he certainly was also more than capable of producing wonderful comedy film posters (see; Mi Mujer no es Mia). Vargas' son, Juan Antonio Vargas Ocampo followed in his father and grandfather's footsteps, and also had a illustrious career designing movie posters. When some see the 'Vargas' signature, they confuse this artist with Alberto Vargas -- the well-known pin-up artist. In fact, they are two separate people. And while both are adept at portraying sexy women, each has their own distinctive style. Many posters were signed by the artist, but it is possible that there are unsigned examples, as well.

Please Note: Mexican onesheet movie posters are usually printed on thin, fragile paper, which has tended to become brittle with age. Because of this, even posters which have never been used, often have small nicks and tears around the borders and some splitting / separation at the fold lines. In order to protect the posters from additional damage (which in extreme cases, can sometimes occur by simply unfolding the poster), we sometimes use acid-free, archival tape on the back of the posters (usually on the fold lines) to reinforce them. This thin tissue-based tape is especially made for this purpose -- and it will not yellow, dry out, or harm the paper. The tape is invisible on the front. Hay un Nino en su Futura (1951)

(Vargas & Cabral? Art)

Wonderful Mexican comedy movie poster shows three young adults, who are at the mercy of their tyrannical infant. During an interview, Ernesto Garcia Cabral Jr. stated that his father contributed to the art work on this poster, and he remembered watching his father at work on it. The three portraits along the bottom certainly have his father's style and it is known that Cabral did collaborate with other artists on other posters. The onesheet is signed by Vargas, but we believe it is likely that Cabral did collaborate in creating this classic poster... The film starred Gloria Marin, Abel Salazar, Victor Junco, Andres Soler, Pedro Vargas and Pompin Iglesias. $225

Attractive Mexican movie poster with a great image of Ms. Lamarque. It features vibrant coloring and a psychedelic design -- expressing emotional turmoil. This Mexican horror film poster is nothing short of stunning -- with superb color and incredible horror graphics. The voodoo film was shot in Argentina, but this fabulous poster is from the original Mexican release. There is a bit of restoration along the fold lines, but this is not very distracting. The poster looks great and the colors are still bright!... The film starred Arturo De Cordova, Virginia Luque, Nestor Zavarce and Juana Sujo. Noche de Nuestra (1951)

Elegant Mexican romance movie poster features a wonderful close-up image of Mistral and Guiu. There is also a film noirish hand with a bloody knife near the lower left corner. The poster has some wear along the left side border, but this does not affect the lovely image area. Also, in the past, someone reinforced the center of the bottom horizontal fold line on the back with tape, and the tape has discolored a small section of the poster a bit. This flaw is slightly visible on the front, but it is not very distracting. Otherwise, the colors are bright and the poster will still display beautifully... The film starred Jorge Mistral, Emilia Guiu, Ramon Gay, Cesar del Campo and Aurora Walker. Sold

Puerto de Tentacion (1950)

Colorful rural film noir poster features vibrant coloring and a great close-up image of the sexy Ms. Guiu. Attractive Mexican onesheet with an unusual look. There is some wear and light damage along the side borders, but this flaw does not greatly affect the main image area -- which is clean and bright. The borders could easily be restored, and the poster would look superb... The film starred Ramon Armengod, Emilia Guiu, Jose Maria Linares-Rivas and Gloria Rios. (Rolled) $85

Sensualidad (1950)

VG+/Exc (on Linen) * See description

Beautiful Mexican film noir movie poster has a great image of the seductive Ms. Sevilla, plus a close-up of and anguished Soler. This highly desirable poster has been professionally restored along the left side. The poster had apparently gotten damp at some point and there was heavy damage / paper loss along the left edge -- which entered the edge of the printed area. This poster has had restoration along the entire left border, and it was very well done. Unless you look closely, the poster looks to be almost mint, and it displays superbly. (See the bargain poster section to see what the poster looked like before restoration)... The film starred Fernando Soler, Ninon Sevilla, Domingo Soler, Rodolfo Acosta and Ruben Rojo. (This linen-backed poster will be shipped rolled.) $395

Attractive Mexican auto racing /romance film poster has nice portraits of the two romantic leads -- Aguilar and Miroslava. There is also a striking image of a classic car from the era -- possibly a Buick (can anyone verify what kind of car)? There is some touch-up around the G in GLORIA, but this does not detract from the main images. Otherwise, the poster will display beautifully... The film starred Luis Aguilar, Miroslava Stern, Jorge Martinez de Hoyos, Jose Baviera and Gloria Mange. (This poster is mounted on linen, so it must be sent rolled.) $495
