Josep Renau Berenguer left his native Spain, and emigrated to Mexico during the time of the Spanish civil war. Renau became active in the creation of Mexican film posters shortly after his arrival to his adopted country. During the 1940s and 1950s, Renau was probably the most prolific artist working in the Mexican movie industry. He personally created over 200 Mexican film posters. Renau's brother, Juanino Renau Berenguer (better known as, Juanino) and his son, Ruy Renau were also quite active in the business. While many of the artist's posters have a somewhat standard look and design, Renau is probably best known for a unique style he created -- best described as a photo montage. These distinctive posters combined photographic images with beautiful caricatures -- often of the film's stars. Like Cabral, Renau specialized in a specific film genres. But while Cabral is best know for comedies, Renau posters are often darker in tone -- film noirs or melodramas. Most (but not all) Renau posters were signed by the artist. |

Please Note: Mexican onesheet movie posters are usually printed on cheap, fragile paper, which has tended to become brittle with age. Because of this, even posters which have never been used, often have small nicks and tears around the borders and some splitting / separation at the fold lines. In order to protect the posters from additional damage (which in extreme cases, can sometimes occur by simply unfolding the poster), we sometimes use acid-free, archival tape on the back of the posters (usually on the fold lines) to reinforce them. This thin tissue-based tape is especially made for this purpose -- and it will not yellow, dry out, or harm the paper. The tape is invisible on the front. This is not your typical Renau poster -- he seldom designed art work for comedies. There is some toning along the lower fold and some general touch-up, but these do not greatly detract from the beautiful main image... Striking Mexican film noir movie poster combines a montage colorful artwork -- including a sexy femme fatale, plus B&W photo-images. **** Please Note: Apparently, there was a title change on this film, after the posters were printed. And rather than print new posters, the studio just used a quick streak of black poster paint, to cover the words: Donde el. This over-painting was not done with the greatest of care, but it isn't too distracting. Unfortunately, 99% of the posters I have seen on this title have this same flaw. We are not sure whether or not this paint could be removed. Otherwise, the poster is clean and bright.
